    Curriculum

Our members use GEP materials in a wide variety of ways depending on the course structure and student backgrounds. These implementations range from incorporating short lessons into an existing course (e.g., using a genome browser to investigate eukaryotic gene structure) to participating in a genomics Course-based Undergraduate Research Experience centered around comparative gene annotation.

    Research Projects

The Genomics Education Partnership introduces students to research in genomics by engaging them in projects for which careful annotation of genes from recently sequenced species provides important data. Many scientific questions can be addressed using comparative genomics, as evolution enables us to identify conserved features and important changes.

Drosophila yakuba – Tsc1

November 16, 2021
Gaining research experience is limited at many institutions due to budget and resource constraints. What is magical about GEP is that it’s entirely web-based and students only need access to the internet, whereas normally they may need access to laboratories and biological specimens. This is a great equalizer, and helps students become better scientists and better citizens because they can apply those critical thinking skills to any scenario. Genomics Education Partnership (thegep.org) Summer Education Research Workshop The Assessment Committee is considering new education research questions and is planning a 5-day virtual summer workshop for GEP faculty interested in 1) professional development in education research and 2) collaborating on designing and conducting education research projects during the 2021/2022 academic year. The workshop will be facilitated by Professional-development for Emerging Education Researchers (PEER). Who: All interested GEP faculty members are welcome to attend What: Based on PEER curriculum Where: Virtual When: June 28 - July 2, 2021; 2 hrs/day How: Synchronous Add yourself to the Trello card (thegep.org/GEP-PEER) if you are interested in participating (free-as everything in GEP!) or want more information!

F Element Project Reconciliation Statistics Fall 2020-Spring 2021 Gene model submission statistics: reconciled 848 gene models; approximately 75% of the submitted gene models were in congruence with the final gene models. Breakdown of annotation errors (n=232; note: some models have multiple annotation errors): The most common annotation error in the submitted gene models is the selection of incorrect splice site boundaries (24%) followed by start/stop codon error (18%), extra/missing exon (12%), missing pseudogene or retrogene (12%), gene model missing (9%), not the orthologous model (8%), mislabeled/missing isoform (6%), novel isoform (6%), and submission error (5%).
