May 5, 2021 — The Genomics Education Partnership (GEP) will be featured in the 2021 STEM for All Video Showcase funded by the National Science Foundation. The event will be held online May 11 – 18.
Now in its seventh year, the annual showcase will feature 287 innovative projects aimed at improving Science, Math, Engineering, and Computer Science education, which have been funded by the National Science Foundation and other federal agencies. During the eight-day event, researchers, practitioners, policy makers and members of the public are invited to view the short videos, discuss them with the presenters online, and vote for their favorites. The 2020 STEM for All Video Showcase is still being accessed, and to date has had over 86,000 unique visitors from 180 countries.
The theme for this year’s event is “COVID, Equity & Social Justice.” Video presentations address broadening participation, impacts of COVID on STEM teaching and learning, design implementation on STEM and Computer Science programs, research informing STEM and Computer Science teaching and learning, and measuring impact of innovative programs.
The presentation, entitled “Democratizing Genomics Research Experiences in a Pandemic,” looks at how GEP adapted to the global pandemic to strengthen a growing virtual community of faculty that promotes and supports students’ intellectual engagement, active learning, and undergraduate research while requiring nothing more than a computer with internet access.
GEP’s Program Director, Dr. Laura Reed (Associate Professor at The University of Alabama), strongly feels “the research experience should not be limited to those who have access to a lab. When the world shifted online during the pandemic, GEP proved that research can still go on. We are more confident than ever that all students can have access to a research experience.”
Extensive contributions to GEP’s video project were made by Dr. Anya Goodman (California Polytechnic State University-San Luis Obispo), Dr. Rivka Glaser (Stevenson University), Dr. Marisol Santisteban (University of North Carolina at Pembroke), Dr. Alexa Sawa (College of the Desert), and Katie Sandlin (GEP Curriculum, Recruitment, & Training Specialist; The University of Alabama).
The GEP is funded by the National Science Foundation (#1915544) and National Institute of General Medical Sciences of the National Institutes of Health (#R25GM1305) with continuing support from The University of Alabama and Washington University in St. Louis.
The GEP invites interested current and future faculty to join the partnership; faculty from Community Colleges, Primarily Undergraduate Institutions, and Minority Serving Institutions teaching courses in genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, molecular biology, evolution, or introductory biology are especially welcomed to join.
